Briefly in English:
Project Sauna Savu

"This object to me is the epitome of what sauna should be. Pure, calm, almost like a nest, safe haven, place to relax and empty your mind. Both visually and in athmosphere, it was beautiful.”.

In Finnish tradition, sauna is as much a prosaic place for bathing as a sacred place of the spirits of nature. Even today, sauna still has its strong empact for both physical and mental wellness.

Vernacular architecture meets contemporary design

Sauna Savu is a sensitive mixture of Finnish vernacular architecture and Scandinavian contemporary design. Its charred surface, scent of tar and smoke, use of light and simplicity make one’s mind to the very origins of sauna, while being structurally still modern and innovative.
The structure of Sauna Savu is made out of planks and set on fire after construction. Interior surfaces of the sauna are washed instantly after completing the burning process.

Burning the surface is an ancient way to protect wood that has being widely forgotten. This is both a way to make the structure durable against nature conditions but also gives the whole building its strong character.
The sauna can be heated with both electric and wood fired sauna ovens.

Awarded sauna concept

Sauna Savu is a modular Finnish sauna designed by two prize winning students of architecture. The prototype of Sauna Savu was released for the first time at Habitare Fair ‘09 in Helsinki, Finland in September 2009.
Sauna won the 2nd prize in the Habitare Design Competition for architects and designers under the age of 35. Habitare is Finland’s largest furniture, interior decoration and design fair.

The design of Sauna Savu is a registered Community Design in European Union. 'Sauna Savu' is a trademark of Saunasavu.com.
